About the archive

The Kirkgate’s Cockermouth Heritage group is committed to preserving and showcasing our rich photographic heritage. Over the years, we have been entrusted with a diverse collection of images that reflect our community’s vibrant history and cultural identity. Our goal is to make these valuable assets accessible to the public, providing a searchable database of images that anyone can explore.

Our unique collection has been gathered from various sources, all attributed and catalogued with as much information as we hold, and captures moments that tell powerful stories about our past. Our large photographic and ephemera collection reflects all aspects of Cockermouth’s life, and we are grateful to those who have donated or allowed us to copy their photographs.

We are currently undertaking a major cataloguing project of all our artefacts and photographs using a cataloguing programme called MODES which, when completed, will make locating items for exhibitions or research much easier and quicker.
